The Colemans are good role models
This letter is in response to Bob Welch’s Aug. 16 column (“Epithet lights fire of inspiration”). I want to recognize and support Cal Coleman and his entire Oregon family. His mother and father have mentored us as parents and educators for years. As a parent in a biracial couple, I am alert to good role models that provide my 12-year-old black daughter proactive and resilient responses to racism in our world.
I also was inspired by Coleman and his family on stage. Their Cuthbert Amphitheater concert made my summer evening a perfect one. Their rendition of “Amazing Grace” was heavenly. It reflected Cal and Shelley’s commitment to meld musical talent and spirituality to form a deep pool of consciousness in which to raise our children in a world made stronger and more secure by Coleman’s strength of character.
The world cannot be reduced to black and white anymore because we are nuanced and empowered by leaders such as Cal Coleman. He deserves thanks for turning poison into promise.
